Goal Setting

My wife and I were recently on a cycling vacation in Tucson, Arizona with friends.  One of the suggested rides at the local bike store was tackling the ascent of Mount Lemmon.  This sounded like a challenge but one worthy of pursuit.  We decided that our goal would be to ride halfway to the summit.  This represented an elevation change of about 3000 feet over a distance of approximately 12 miles (20 km).

Review: BlackBerry Q5

As a small business owner, one thing is critical: keeping connected! A large part of my business is communication whether that’s sending emails, speaking with members of the Small Business Community Network (SBCN) or building and maintaining relationships across social media.

You might have heard the expression “The early bird catches the worm”. I think it’s crucial in my business that I can respond quickly to people. In fact, I’ve won business because I was able to respond faster than my competitors!

Can LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter Help my Business?

I write articles when someone asks me a question about a certain topic, because that way I can share the information with more people who might need the answer.

Social media is quite the thing today and I am often asked :

  • What
  • Why
  • When
  • How

SMB's in particlar are very eager to use the social media platforms, but often have no idea why, what for, when or how and those are important questions, but I think we should go backwards first, before we go forwards, in order to answer those questions.

Digital business incompetence' will cause 1/4 of companies to lose competitive ranking

Digital business incompetence' will cause 1/4 of companies to lose competitive ranking

A quarter of businesses will lose competitive ranking over the next few years because of “digital business incompetence,” according to research firm Gartner.

Based on a survey of 151 participants involved in digital business strategy, 90% said they thought competition for talent will make or break digital business success, Gartner says.

Some SMB's Just Don't Get It

As a small business owner myself, I have worked very hard since 2001 to have a recognizable brand for both Motivational Steps and the Small Business Community Network (SBCN). If you have a strong brand presence, and you continue to network with your contacts, and build relationships, both face to face and online, you will certainly reap the long term rewards.

When You Need an Online Presence, Price Shouldn't Get in the Way!

We've all heard it: "You should be on Social Media" or "I couldn't find you online". As competition has heated up on the web, it's getting harder and harder to be found and engage with your customers. After all, you're not just sitting there chatting on Facebook – You've got a business to run. At the DSGN network, we're a small business to, believe us, we get it. That's why we have spent a lot of time mulling over ways to provide more options to make it easier for small and medium-sized organizations to get the online support they need; at a price that isn't hard to swallow.

Win With the SBCN & TELUS

At our recent SBCN Connect event, we were super-excited to giveaway a brand-new BlackBerry Q5, courtesy of TELUS! Interest in BlackBerry's latest device was obvious with all the attendees crossing fingers, closing eyes and hoping to hear their name picked.

In the end, the lucky winner was SBCN Member Monika Szymczak. As you can see in the below, she was pretty excited to receive her new smartphone from Linda Ockwell-Jenner on behalf of the SBCN and TELUS.

Don't Compare Yourself to Others

I meet so many people who are thinking about starting a new business, their ideas are great, they have passion, but the hard work of building strong foundations can mean they look for short cuts.

It's OK to research other organizations similar to yours to see what they are doing, how they do it, how long it took etc,but in order to stand out from the crowd and be unique don't try to BE the other business, don't try to DO everything like the other business, don't try to HIDE behind a brand that does not belong to you and means you will fail.
