We're currently in a very challenging economic period. I use the word "challenging" rather than the technical term, "recession," because the impact of our economic condition is different for each business. Some are really hurting, while some are doing okay. But every small business owner is justified in being concerned about the next 12 months.

I get asked that question a lot. In fact, after "how do I start a business?" it's in all likelihood the most asked question by new clients. I decided the best way to describe why you might decide to write a business plan is to tell you a story about a client of mine. The name and business are fictional. We're going to call him David and he is going to have a mechanic shop. The stories I am going to tell you are a combination of things that have happened to me and to some of my clients.

We make our living as guerillas - not the bad kind, but more of a freedom fighter. By using the term 'guerilla'. Take EMJ (now a division of SYNNEX) as an example. They fight for business against big gorillas (other distributors) in the field. Their competitors are almost 100 times their size. EMJ is a Canadian-based, $165 million per year distributor. They have made an operating profit for the past 80 consecutive quarters. So even though they are up against the big gorillas as a distributor, we must be doing something right.

Most families are spending more and more money every year (and not just because the cost of living is going up). They tend to be saving less and less. One reason is that few household managers spend much time reviewing expenses and expenditures to find ways they can save money. However almost every family has places where costs can be reducted or cut and pennies can be pinched. If those freed up funds are then used to pay down debt and save for the future it could have a dramatic impact on their quality of life for the family without a reduction in lifestyle.

Let's clarify. Not cheap as in the quality of the product but cheap as the cost of the desired item. In today's world, many people want to get the most out of their cash and it is by the actions people take, this theory is proven time and time again. Call it whatever you want; sales, rebates, coupons, discounts. They are all designed for the customer to save money because businesses know that people want a great deal when it comes to something that is directly related to a person's standard of living.
